Wait! Don’t Wash That Newborn!

Posted by Jennifer Azzariti

Do you ever watch a television show where a baby is born and laugh as they hand the new mom a clean, approximately 8-week old baby? Most people are well-aware that babies are born with a slimy mucus-like covering on them. For years, I just assumed it was from being inside the mom’s uterus—leftover amniotic fluid or something that surrounded the baby while in the uterus. Well, it has a name—vernix. And by definition, it’s “a white cheeselike protective material that covers the skin of a fetus.” But, what is it, and why do babies have it?

Pitocin induced labor doubles the risk of ADHD

(NaturalNews) Pregnant mothers often anxiously await the arrival of their little one. Unfortunately, this anxious waiting has turned into an epidemic of labor induction. Scientific research has recently uncovered the reality that labor induction poses several risks to both mother and baby. In April 2011 Researchers from the Department of Psychiatry at Colorado State University published a study showing a strong relationship between pitocin induction and the incidence of ADHD. Labor induction has been linked in previous studies to increased risk of c-section, instrumental delivery, shoulder dystocia, NICU admission, and respiratory problems in the baby, among other complications. Elective induction of labor should be brought into question as research continues to increase indicating significant health risks without adequate benefit.

The Balancing Act

As women we all need to hear that we need to let things go and give up the need to seem like we have EVERYTHING under control. With a new baby this is even more important. Right now it is most important to focus on your baby and yourself, and finding that connection and balance. All of the other things will come and you will get back to normal (or your new normal). As Nicole says, "it won't be this way forever." Cherish this small period of time and soak in every part of it. You have the rest of your life to clean and cook and catch up.

Days where time was so readily available to just hop in the car and go wherever, whenever. Now, it takes 2.5 hours just to get in the shower. Then we need to feed the baby. Then change the baby. Then feed the baby...

Normal Newborn Behavior and Why Breastmilk Isn't Just Food

What is a normal, term human infant supposed to do?
First of all, a human baby is supposed to be born vaginally. Yes, I know that doesn't always happen, but we're just going to talk ideal, normal for now. We are supposed to be born vaginally because we need good bacteria. Human babies are sterile, without bacteria, at birth. It's no accident that we are born near the anus, an area that has lots of bacteria, most of which are good and necessary for normal gut health and development of the immune system. And the bacteria that are there are mom's bacteria, bacteria that she can provide antibodies against if the bacteria there aren't nice.
